Spain’s Ministry of Economy and Commerce reported a 625% increase in Spanish imports of Moroccan cereals in 2024 compared to 2023, multiplying more than sevenfold to reach €1.5 million, according to the Spanish news outlet Okdiario.
The report further highlighted that cereal imports from Morocco surged from 240,000 kg in 2023 to 1.87 million kg in 2024—a staggering 680% increase in just one year.
Okdiario also reported that importing Moroccan cereal to Spain has become cheaper, impacting national producers, as the cost of these imports soared from €205,295 to €1,489,370—a 625% increase in just 12 months.
This sharp rise in Moroccan imports comes as Spain seeks to keep cereal prices low in the domestic market. The influx of imported cereal, particularly from Morocco and Ukraine, has significantly driven down local cereal prices.
With the increased supply from foreign markets, local cereal prices in Spain have taken a hit, forcing Spanish farmers to slash their prices by 45% since May 2022, according to data from Unión de Uniones, Spain’s second-largest agricultural union, said the same source.
Spain’s imports of Ukrainian cereals hit 8.4 million tons in 2023 and 6.5 million tons in the first half of 2024. Agricultural sector representatives pointed out that Spain receives more than half of all Ukrainian cereals entering the EU, adding further pressure on local prices.
