Younes El Tazi, Wali of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, stressed Morocco’s commitment to enhancing urban infrastructure and meeting global challenges ahead of its joint hosting of the 2030 World Cup with Spain and Portugal. During the opening session of the 62nd Executive Council of the Arab Cities Organization in Tangier, El Tazi highlighted the nation’s ongoing efforts in urban development, sustainable mobility, and environmental preservation.
He noted that Arab cities are facing substantial challenges in areas like urban planning, renewable energy, and youth employment, emphasizing the need for policies promoting innovation and entrepreneurship. “These efforts require collective action to drive positive change in Arab cities,” El Tazi said.

El Tazi also pointed to Morocco’s achievements in decentralizing governance and modernizing infrastructure as part of the country’s broader development model. “These initiatives align with the royal vision that places people and the environment at the center of our policies,” he added. He expressed pride in Morocco’s development progress, particularly in the southern regions, where infrastructure projects are boosting connectivity and sustainability.
Highlighting Morocco’s innovative transportation solutions, El Tazi referenced the high-speed train line “Al-Boraq” as a significant milestone in enhancing sustainable mobility. He also mentioned public transit improvements in cities through trams and high-quality buses.

Meanwhile, Tangier Mayor Younes Lemouri stressed the need for innovative local solutions to address challenges posed by urban expansion, environmental pressures, and social change. Lemouri called for policies that balance economic growth with environmental sustainability while preserving cultural identities. He highlighted the Greater Tangier project, an example of integrated urban planning focused on improving quality of life, public transport, and heritage preservation.
The conference concluded with calls for stronger collaboration among Arab cities to create a roadmap for sustainable urban growth and shared development goals. Lemouri emphasized that such cooperation is vital for shaping a promising future for future generations.
