The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) announced on Wednesday that Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso have officially withdrawn from the regional bloc, marking an unprecedented rupture after a year-long effort to prevent fragmentation.
In a statement, ECOWAS confirmed that the withdrawal, first announced last year, has now taken effect. However, the organization also emphasized that it will keep its doors open, urging member states to continue extending certain privileges to the three departing nations, including freedom of movement within the region using ECOWAS passports.
The exit of these three countries—each led by military juntas—raises concerns about regional stability, economic integration, and security cooperation in West Africa.
