“Russia is helping Morocco in seeking a resolution to the Western Sahara issue,” emphasized Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during a press conference reviewing the achievements of Russian diplomacy in 2024, according to the Russian news agency TASS.
Lavrov emphasized that “Morocco is a friendly country. We have good plans. We are assisting Moroccans in addressing issues within the competence of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, particularly the issue of Western Sahara.”
The Russian Foreign Minister added that “such issues cannot be resolved unilaterally, as they will inevitably resurface in the future. We need to seek mutually acceptable agreements.”
He went on to emphasize that “we understand how important this issue is for Morocco, and we will make every effort to assist. However, the issue can only be resolved based on mutual consent, not by imposing solutions on one side.”
Recalling the historical context, the head of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted that The UN Security Council decided long ago—about 40 years ago—that the question of Western Sahara’s status should be resolved through the self-determination of Western Sahara, emphasizing that, even after all this time, “nothing has progressed.”
Lavrov additionally criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Moroccan sovereignty over the southern territories.
He argued that “such unilateral decisions only sow discord and inevitably lead to future conflicts,” comparing the move to Trump’s statements about reclaiming the Panama Canal.
