The province of Settat has finalized all legal and administrative preparations for the construction of the high-speed rail line (LGV) connecting Kenitra and Marrakech, according to local officials. The project, described as a transformative milestone for the region, will span approximately 63.5 kilometers through several municipalities within the province.
At a meeting chaired Friday by Ibrahim Abouzeid, the governor of Settat Province, stakeholders reviewed the project’s progress and discussed next steps. Attendees included representatives from the Ministry of Equipment and Transport, the National Railway Office (ONCF), local government officials, and other relevant parties.
Abouzeid underscored his commitment to overseeing the project personally and ensuring it adheres to international standards of quality and technical excellence. “This initiative places Settat Province at the forefront of national infrastructure development,” he said.
The high-speed rail line will pass through several municipalities, including Sidi Al Aydi, Settat, Mazamaza Al-Janoubia, Al-Hawaza, Khemisset Al-Chaouia, Sidi Mohammed Ben Rahal, and Mashraa Ben Abou. It will cover a total of 996 parcels of land, amounting to approximately 550 hectares.
Officials confirmed that the land has been expropriated for public use in accordance with Moroccan law. Abouzeid described the project as a critical step in enhancing Morocco’s transportation infrastructure and fostering regional economic development.
During the meeting, officials emphasized the importance of compensating landowners promptly and fairly. Authorities plan to expedite the expropriation process and engage with affected citizens to reach amicable agreements.
The ONCF has been tasked with providing a list of compensation beneficiaries to local authorities. These authorities will work directly with landowners to distribute payments for surface damages, such as crops, wells, and vegetation, as well as land ownership claims. The compensation process is expected to begin next week.
The construction of the rail line will be carried out in two major sections. A Moroccan company will oversee the fourth section, covering municipalities such as Sidi Al Aydi and Settat, at a cost of 2.362 billion dirhams. The project is expected to be completed in 33 months.
A Chinese firm will handle the fifth section, which includes municipalities like Khemisset Al-Chaouia and Mashraa Ben Abou, at a cost of 1.529 billion dirhams. This section is also scheduled for completion within 33 months.
Local officials and stakeholders believe the high-speed rail line will significantly enhance connectivity and attract investment to the region. The project is expected to boost economic development in Settat Province and beyond, aligning with Morocco’s broader infrastructure goals.
“This project will not only improve transportation but also create opportunities for economic growth and regional integration,” Abouzeid said.
The initiative forms part of Morocco’s efforts to modernize its railway network and strengthen its position as a regional hub for trade and commerce.
