ONCF plans AI-powered surveillance system across Morocco’s rail network

Morocco’s National Railway Office, or ONCF, has launched a tender to develop a nationwide surveillance strategy combining video monitoring, artificial intelligence and “hypervision” across the rail network through 2030.

The contract, valued at 1.08 million dirhams ($118,000), calls for an outside firm to help ONCF design the surveillance framework. Companies have until Oct. 7 to submit their offers.

The planned system would bring cameras, security alerts and other monitoring tools together through a centralized platform, allowing ONCF to monitor railway sites and coordinate responses to security incidents in real time.

Consultation documents envisage about 6,000 cameras across the network by 2030, with roughly 30% equipped to use artificial intelligence-based video analysis.

Potential applications include detecting intrusions, monitoring crowds, identifying abandoned objects and monitoring trains.

The tender concerns the design and planning of the system rather than its full deployment. The technologies to be adopted and the final scope of the surveillance network will be determined as part of the planning process.

The tender documents do not specify the use of facial recognition technology.

The surveillance project comes as ONCF undertakes a broader expansion and modernization of Morocco’s railway network ahead of 2030. The operator has announced an investment program worth 96 billion dirhams covering high-speed rail, regional services, new stations and maintenance facilities.

Work is also underway on a 430-kilometer high-speed railway linking Kenitra and Marrakech, a project expected to become a major component of Morocco’s expanded rail network.

The planned surveillance framework is therefore being developed for a rail system expected to handle substantially higher passenger volumes and more complex operations by the end of the decade.

ONCF says the centralized approach is intended to consolidate information from different parts of the network and improve the monitoring of railway facilities and the management of security incidents.
