The five Israeli tourists who died in a severe car accident in southern Morocco were members of the Hasidic Breslov Jewish community,  according to a trusted source.

The accident occurred on a road between the Tazarine area in the Zagora province and the Nif area in Tinghir province. Four of the victims were from one family, including two siblings, while the fifth was from another family. One of the deceased was a minor, and most were residents of Safed, Israel, the source said.

The group had arrived in Morocco earlier this week as part of a pilgrimage to visit the graves of notable rabbis, according to Hebrew media reports. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, leading to the crash.

In response to the tragedy, the Israeli emergency organization ZAKA said it was coordinating with Moroccan authorities to identify the victims and facilitate the repatriation of the bodies for burial.

“We have just received the report about this serious accident. We are working with the authorities in Morocco to expedite the release and identification of the bodies and assist the families in every way possible,” ZAKA said in a statement.

Yossi Kakon, the mayor of Safed, mourned the loss in a statement: “I have learned with great sadness about the tragic car accident in Morocco involving several residents of Safed. We are in constant contact with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the relevant authorities.”

The incident has cast a shadow over the group’s pilgrimage and prompted close cooperation between Moroccan and Israeli officials.
