A new report from the INJAD Network Against Gender-Based Violence, released Thursday, reveals alarming statistics on violence against women in Morocco and calls for comprehensive legal reforms. The report found that 57% of violence against women is committed by their spouses, and a shocking 20% of women in the country face the threat of eviction from their homes.
The report recommends a major overhaul of the legal definition of violence, including the explicit criminalization of marital rape, and the elimination of virginity tests. It also calls for the decriminalization of consensual relationships.
Furthermore, the report advocates for a broader definition of violence to encompass harmful practices such as child marriage, honor crimes, and the abuse of widows. It also stresses the need to address violence in specific contexts, including conflict zones, state-sanctioned neglect (such as violence during detention), violence perpetrated by security forces, political violence, and digital violence.
