French energy company MGH Energy is set to invest $5 billion in a groundbreaking green hydrogen project in southern Morocco, according to Bloomberg.
The project, named Janassim, aims to produce synthetic fuel using green hydrogen, a clean energy source produced from renewable electricity and water.
The investment will cover the construction of necessary facilities, including wind turbines, solar power plants, electrolyzers, and synthetic fuel production units.
The company’s director in Morocco, Younes Hafan, said that the company has submitted a request to the government as part of its green hydrogen strategy. The first plots of land for clean energy projects are expected to be allocated before the end of the year.
“The synthetic fuel produced from this project is specifically targeted for the aviation and maritime sectors, where decarbonization through electrification is challenging or even impossible,” the director said.
The director added that the demand for this fuel is expected to be driven by European and international regulations that encourage companies to integrate low-carbon solutions into their operations.
Construction of the Janassim project is scheduled to begin in 2027, with commercial operations slated for 2030, coinciding with the launch of Morocco’s Dakhla Atlantic port. This timing will facilitate the distribution of the synthetic fuel to both domestic and European markets.
The synthetic fuel will be supplied to various Moroccan ports, including Dakhla in the south and Nador in the north, which are currently under construction. It will also be made available to both Moroccan and European airlines.
The director said that the Janassim project aligns with global efforts to decarbonize the aviation and maritime sectors and contributes to the ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
