Spain’s Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food, Luis Planas, defended on Monday the need to deepen strategic relations with Morocco following the European Court of Justice’s (ECJ) ruling to annul agriculture and fisheries agreements with the Kingdom.
Iberian news outlet Europa Press noted that the Spanish Minister emphasized that “the collaboration between Morocco and Spain exceeds what the ruling has proposed.”
“We will respect the ruling, but we are politically very interested in deepening strategic relations with Morocco,” said Planas in remarks to the media in Luxembourg before the meeting of EU agriculture and fisheries ministers.
The same source reported that the Spanish Minister stressed that the “bloc must now evaluate the consequences of the ruling from both a legal and political perspective” when asked whether he believes the EU should explore a new deal that would include the Polisario Front in the negotiations.
The Spanish official revealed that he will be traveling to Rabat next Friday to participate in the ministerial meeting of the International Center for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), where he is expected to meet with his Moroccan counterparts.
On October 4th, Spain’s Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares stressed his country’s respect for the judgment of the ECJ concerning the agricultural and fisheries agreements between the EU and Morocco, while defending the “strategic partnership” with the Kingdom of Morocco and the will to maintain it.
The Spanish top diplomat underlined his country’s commitment to a stable relationship with the Kingdom, asserting that the Spanish government will continue to “work with the European Union and Morocco to preserve and further develop this privileged relationship.”
