The National Office for Food Safety (ONSSA) has issued a new regulation governing the importation of fresh, frozen, or chilled red meats into Morocco, amid an unprecedented rise in meat prices in the market.

According to the new regulation, the import of fresh red meats—whether frozen or chilled—is permitted from a defined list of countries.

For sheep and goat meats, imports are allowed from all European Union countries, as well as Andorra, Albania, Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Russia, Serbia, Singapore, Sweden, and Uruguay.

In the case of beef, importers can also source from Brazil, Paraguay, and Ukraine, in addition to the previously mentioned countries.

All imported meat must be accompanied by a health certificate issued by the relevant authorities in the country of origin. This document, available for download on ONSSA’s website, must confirm that the meat meets required health standards.

Imports intended for Morocco must be certified Halal by an accredited religious body in the exporting country to meet local dietary requirements.

Upon arrival in Morocco, meat will undergo rigorous inspections at border checkpoints to ensure compliance with health regulations before being released into the market. Importers must also have ONSSA-approved facilities for the storage of meat to ensure optimal preservation and adherence to food safety standards.

This new regulation is effective immediately upon signing, reinforcing the sanitary framework for red meat imports while ensuring the safety of Moroccan consumers.
