Morocco to launch training programs for green hydrogen sector development

In a bid to bolster its green hydrogen sector, a vital part of its renewable energy strategy, Morocco is set to establish specialized training programs aimed at equipping technicians with the skills needed for the green hydrogen and renewable energy industries.

With the rising demand for skilled professionals in renewable energy, the Moroccan government is launching Institutes for Training in Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Professions (IFMEREE). These institutes will be strategically located in Oujda, Tangier, and Ouarzazate—regions critical to the country’s energy transition.

The IFMEREE institutes will offer specialized training in several key areas. Programs will include Wind Energy, where trainees will learn to operate and maintain wind power systems; Photovoltaics, focusing on the installation and maintenance of solar photovoltaic systems; and Energy Efficiency, with courses designed to optimize energy use across various sectors.

These comprehensive programs will combine theoretical knowledge with practical experience, ensuring graduates are well-prepared to meet industry demands.

Additionally, Morocco is expanding its training infrastructure through the Office of Vocational Training and Employment Promotion (OFPPT). The newly operational Institute Specialized in Renewable Energy Professions (ISMER) in Tarfaya will provide training opportunities in the southern regions of the country.

These educational initiatives are integral to Morocco’s broader energy strategy, which aims for a 45.5% reduction in emissions from baseline levels by 2030, with international support. The strategy also seeks to increase the share of renewable energy sources in the national energy mix and position Morocco as a leader in green hydrogen production and export.

By investing in specialized training and education, Morocco is laying a strong foundation for a sustainable future, creating job opportunities, and developing a skilled workforce.
