A United Nations team specializing in digital field-awareness tools visited the U.N. Mission for the Referendum in the Sahara (MINURSO) this month to strengthen the mission’s use of advanced technologies for peacekeeping operations, according to the U.N. Department of Peace Operations.
In a statement published on its official X account, the department said the Unit Aware team conducted a field visit to MINURSO in June, delivering a series of workshops and training sessions for mission personnel.
The training focused on enhancing staff capabilities in using the Unit Aware digital platform, which provides advanced tools designed to support situational awareness in the field and improve the collection and analysis of operational data.
The initiative forms part of broader U.N. efforts to integrate modern technologies and digital solutions into peacekeeping missions, with the aim of improving responses to changing conditions on the ground and supporting decision-making in operational environments.
Unit Aware is among the digital systems used by the United Nations to strengthen the performance of peacekeeping missions deployed in conflict-affected regions. The platform enables real-time information gathering, analysis and coordination, helping improve operational efficiency and field-level collaboration.
The training sessions were attended by Alexander Ivanko, the U.N. secretary-general’s special representative and head of MINURSO, as well as Maj. Gen. Fakhrul Ahsan, force commander of the mission.
Their participation underscored the importance MINURSO leadership places on developing digital capabilities and enhancing situational awareness tools to support the effectiveness of U.N. peacekeeping operations.
