A recent survey by Arab Barometer has uncovered a troubling decline in support for gender equality in politics among Arab women.

The survey, which included participants from seven Arab countries, highlights a rising belief that men are more qualified for political leadership.

The survey found that 57% of Moroccans now hold the view that men are better suited for political roles, including 48% of women. This marks a noticeable increase in the percentage of women who believe men are more capable leaders.

Countries such as Jordan and Kuwait exhibit even stronger support for the notion that men are more suitable for political positions, with over 70% of citizens in these nations endorsing this view.

Although Tunisia and Lebanon reported lower percentages, the overall trend of diminishing support for women in politics is evident across the region.

In Kuwait, women’s endorsement of male superiority in politics has increased by 13 percentage points in recent years, outpacing the rise in support among men.

The survey also revealed significant gender disparities in attitudes towards political leadership. In Lebanon, women were notably less likely than men to support the idea that men are superior political leaders. Conversely, in Palestine, the views on this issue were largely similar between men and women.

Despite these concerning trends, the survey also highlighted robust support for enhancing women’s representation in political roles. Majorities in all seven surveyed countries advocate for gender quotas in government and believe that increasing women’s presence in politics can positively impact women’s rights.
