Despite the global shift towards renewable energy, fossil fuels remain a significant part of the world’s energy landscape. U.S. thermal coal exports have seen notable growth in the first half of 2024, driven by increased demand from industrial sectors in Asia and Africa, even as coal shipments to Europe have significantly declined.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), U.S. thermal coal exports to Morocco and Egypt surged in the first six months of 2024. Morocco imported approximately 2.8 million tons of U.S. thermal coal, a substantial increase from 1.4 million tons during the same period in 2023. Egypt also saw a rise, importing about 2.4 million tons, up from around 1.8 million tons a year earlier.

The heightened demand for U.S. thermal coal in North Africa is attributed to its high energy content, which enhances production efficiency in industries such as cement and brick manufacturing. In contrast, U.S. thermal coal exports to Asia grew by 19% and those to Africa increased by 60% in the first half of 2024. Meanwhile, exports to Europe plummeted by 63%, reflecting a significant shift in regional energy consumption.

Several factors contributed to the decline in European coal imports. These include a milder winter, increased reliance on natural gas by electric utilities, and a rise in renewable energy sources for power generation. This shift marks a stark contrast to the trends observed in 2023 and 2022, highlighting Europe’s evolving energy landscape.

U.S. thermal coal is primarily used for generating electricity through steam production, while metallurgical coal is utilized in steelmaking processes. The changes in export patterns underscore the ongoing global energy transition and its impact on fossil fuel markets.
