Morocco’s journey towards political and economic stability over the past two decades has positioned the country as a beacon of progress in the region, according to a recent report by Geopolitical Intelligence Services (GIS).

The report said that the series of reforms initiated by King Mohammed VI have transformed the country, fostering a more democratic and prosperous society.

Morocco’s commitment to modernization and inclusivity stands out amidst the challenges faced by many of its neighbors. By embracing reforms and listening to the concerns of its citizens, Morocco has managed to navigate through turbulent times with relative stability.

According to the report, one of the most significant milestones in Morocco’s reform process was the adoption of a new constitution in 2011.

The constitution expanded the powers of parliament and established a constitutional court, strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring a more accountable government.

In addition to political reforms, Morocco has also implemented a series of economic reforms aimed at promoting growth and job creation.

These reforms have included measures to reduce subsidies, improve the business climate, and attract foreign investment.

As a result of these reforms, the Moroccan economy has witnessed steady growth, and the country has emerged as a major player in sectors such as automotive and aerospace.

The automotive sector, tourism, and digital innovations, including Oracle’s planned data centers and the Digital Strategy 2030, are expected to fuel economic expansion, says the report.

While foreign direct investment saw a dip in 2023, it is projected to rebound with the upcoming 2030 World Cup.

This positive trajectory could solidify Morocco’s international standing and deepen its ties with sub-Saharan Africa, Europe, and the Gulf countries. However, other Maghreb countries  may struggle to replicate this success due to leadership challenges and political instability.

Despite these prospects, Morocco faces potential risks. Rising labor costs, slower technological advancements, and a heavily subsidized economy could erode its competitiveness compared to other emerging economies.

The EU, Morocco’s primary export market, presents challenges in the form of costly regulations and potential economic stagnation.

Growth stagnation could lead to inflationary pressures and social unrest, particularly as the government reduces subsidies.
