Moroccans are set to watch the annual Perseid meteor shower, which will peak next week in a celestial spectacle set to captivate observers worldwide.
Occurring annually around mid-August, the Perseids are renowned for their high meteor rates and favorable summer viewing conditions.
This year’s shower is expected to be impressive due to optimal moon phases, promising a dazzling display of “shooting stars.”
According to space science experts, the Perseid peak will occur on the evening of August 11, as Earth passes through the densest part of the Swift-Tuttle comet’s debris trail and is expected to continue until August 13.
Zuhair Ben Khaldoun, director of the Oukaimeden Astronomical Observatory, explained to Hespress that the Perseids are created when comet debris enters Earth’s atmosphere and burns up, producing the radiant streaks we call meteors. He emphasized the importance of dark, light pollution-free locations for optimal viewing, as the urban environment can obscure the celestial show.
While the Perseid meteor shower is a yearly occurrence, its peak intensity spans only a few days.
This astronomical event attracts both amateur stargazers and professional astronomers, including a dedicated team at Cadi Ayyad University’s Laboratory of Higher Energies and Astronomy.
Enthusiasts are encouraged to find a secluded spot away from city lights to fully experience the magic of the Perseid meteor shower.
