France has enlisted Moroccan security services to help secure the 2024 Paris Olympics, a collaboration that reflects ongoing security cooperation between the two nations, despite recent diplomatic tensions.

The groundwork for this collaboration was laid during high-level meetings between Moroccan and French officials. Notably, Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit met with his French counterpart Gérald Darmanin, who expressed his appreciation for Morocco’s assistance.

Director General of National Security and Territorial Surveillance Abdellatif Hammouchi met with French National Police Director General Frédéric Veaux.

These meetings focused on establishing advanced cooperation in risk assessment, data exchange, and securing the Olympic Games.

The selection of Morocco highlights the trust French security services have in their Moroccan counterparts.

Professor Abbas El Ouardi, a political science expert, believes this collaboration reinforces the ongoing security relationship between the two countries, despite past political disagreements.

The Moroccan security apparatus has a proven track record in securing major sporting events. Mohamed Shakir, a security affairs expert, points to Morocco’s successful contribution to the Qatar World Cup finals as a factor that likely influenced France’s decision.

Additionally, Moroccan security forces have collaborated with French counterparts in dismantling terrorist cells, demonstrating their expertise in counterterrorism measures.

France has asked its foreign allies to send several thousand members of their security forces to help guard the Paris Olympics.

Another 18,000-22,000 private security guards will be on the ground for the Games, which run from July 26 to August 11.

The request for foreign help was “for the spectators’ experience, to respond to the capacity challenge of the Games and to reinforce international cooperation,” the French interior ministry official explained.
