According to the High Commission for Planning (HCP), Morocco has achieved a remarkable decrease in multidimensional poverty. The rate has dropped notably, from 40% in 2001 to just 5.7% in 2022.

This impressive progress is mainly driven by a dramatic reduction in poverty rates within rural areas, where the numbers have dropped from a staggering 73.4% in 2001 to a much lower 11.2% in 2022. In addition, urban areas have also seen a positive change, with poverty rates going down from 13.8% to 2.6% during the same period.

It’s important to acknowledge recent setbacks, however, global events like the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine have caused inflation worldwide. This hurts people’s purchasing power and leads to an increase in monetary poverty, a key factor in multidimensional poverty.

Despite these challenges, Morocco’s progress in reducing multidimensional poverty remains notable.

The importance of ongoing efforts by public authorities to further reduce poverty and address deficiencies in existing social policies has been significantly highlighted by experts.

They call for more effective and targeted interventions, leveraging tools such as the Unified Social Register and other government initiatives.

It’s also crucial to reinforce Morocco’s new development with an emphasis on improving access to education and quality healthcare. By implementing an effective employment strategy and reevaluating current public policies, Morocco can further enhance citizens’ living standards and combat inflation.

This fight against poverty has benefited from several factors: First, economic reforms focused on growth, a friendlier business climate, and more jobs (through infrastructure projects and private sector support).

Second, investments in education and healthcare (new schools, hospitals, RAMED health insurance system, and better-trained teachers and doctors) made these necessities more accessible.

The National Initiative for Human Development and other poverty reduction programs have also enhanced living conditions, making them more decent in both rural and urban poor areas.

Their main focus is on local development projects and access to essential services like potable water, sanitation, electricity, and transportation infrastructure.

Beyond the big picture, other improvements contributed to lower poverty rates. These include fewer children dying young, more children attending school, better housing conditions, and more women working and having a say in their lives.

The government also directly helped poor families through cash transfers and other social programs.
