Sixteen critically endangered West African crocodiles are set to be relocated from Switzerland to Agadir, as part of a first-of-its-kind conservation effort in Africa, reported the Swiss News Agency
The young crocodiles, ranging from 40 centimeters to 1 meter in length, are a rare species native to West Africa and will be joining the two crocodiles already housed at the “Croco Park” in Agadir.
This project marks the return of this crocodile species to Morocco after nearly 60 years of absence.
Luc Fougerolle, a crocodile specialist at Croco Park, cites the lack of hunting pressure and suitable drought conditions in Morocco as ideal factors for the crocodile’s reintroduction.
The animals are expected to arrive tonight following a private plane transport designed to minimize stress on them.
The Moroccan crocodile vanished from the wild in the 1950s due to hunting and habitat loss. This project is part of a larger effort to reintroduce the species. In 2022, two crocodiles arrived from France as part of this ongoing initiative.
