Morocco’s energy minister, Leila Benali, announced progress on the Moroccan-Nigerian gas pipeline project with feasibility studies and engineering designs nearly complete.

The minister said the pipeline will be built in stages, with the first section connecting Senegal and Mauritania to Morocco.

Environmental and social impact assessments are also nearing completion.

Regarding domestic gas exploration, promising results emerged in Gharb, Essaouira, Tundara, and Larache.

The Essaouira Basin continues production, while the Larache Coast shows potential for future development.

The Tendara region received a concession for gas production in 2018. Morocco is also making significant strides in renewable energy.

Over 4.6 gigawatts of projects are nearing completion, meeting roughly 20% of the national electricity demand.

This represents the largest renewable energy licensing in the ministry’s history. Looking ahead, Morocco plans to add another 7.5 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2027, excluding green hydrogen and desalination projects.

Annual investments are expected to reach 15 billion dirhams by 2027. Additionally, the ministry aims to significantly expand the electricity grid and storage capacity to further integrate renewables and natural gas.
