Tensions rise as Morocco holds naval exercises near Canary Islands

The Moroccan Royal Navy began Friday naval exercises, lasting approximately three months, with military ships operating between the coast of Laayoune and Dakhla as well as the Canary Islands.

The maneuvers come in the context of escalating regional tensions and increasing interest in maritime security, especially in areas of strategic importance such as the Strait of Gibraltar and the Canary Islands.

These exercises have sparked friction the Canaries, whose authorities criticize both the Moroccan and Spanish governments for not informing them beforehand.

The move comes after a March 19th circular from Morocco’s Ministry of Agriculture warned fishing vessels to avoid specific areas due to the presence of military ships, as reported by El Confidencial on March 24.

The Popular Party of the Canary Islands, led by Secretary General Jacob Qadri, criticized the Spanish government for its “secrecy” surrounding these maneuvers and demanded full transparency.

Qadri accuses the Spanish government of a broader pattern of silence on issues crucial to the Canary Islands, including border control, territorial waters, and the conflict in the Sahara.

He emphasizes the complete lack of official communication with the Canary Islands regarding these maneuvers.
