One migrant died and about 80 people were detained after Moroccan authorities stopped two irregular migration attempts near Foum El Oued beach outside Laayoune early Friday, an informed source told Hespress.
About 50 of those detained were Moroccan nationals, while the others came from Sahel countries, the source said.
Authorities intercepted the first group after its members entered the water aboard an inflatable boat. The migrant died while entering the sea, according to the source, who provided no further details about the circumstances.
The Royal Gendarmerie and local authorities stopped a second group before it reached the beach during a simultaneous operation.
Videos circulated online showed more than 40 people carrying an inflatable boat toward the coast at night.
Those detained were taken into custody for the required procedures. Authorities opened an investigation into the two attempts and the death.
Foum El Oued is used by migrants attempting Atlantic crossings toward Spain’s Canary Islands.
