Domestic markets are well-stocked with abundant quantities of all the most consumed goods by Moroccan citizens during the holy month of Ramadan, emphasized government spokesman Mustapha Baitas on Thursday.

During the weekly press briefing, the government spokesman underscored that monitoring consumer goods extends throughout the year, not just during Ramadan.

More than 322,316 points of sale were monitored during 2023, he noted, yielding the detection of 15,966 violations, an increase of 28% compared to 2022. Records were drawn up for 12,575 violations and sent to the relevant courts.

Baitas added that “around 1,058 tons of goods unfit for consumption or not in compliance with applicable criteria were destroyed.”

He said that in 2024, during the period from January to February 21, monitoring operations continued, resulting in the monitoring of 31,383 points of sale and the detection of 1,948 violations.

Among these violations, 374 were subject to warnings for the violators, and 1,574 violations were documented and sent to the courts. He also noted that 70 tons of unfit goods were seized and destroyed.

Baitas emphasized in response to journalists’ questions that the measures adopted by the government to mitigate the effect of inflation have started bearing fruits.

He highlighted that the measures were numerous, notably expanding healthcare coverage, reducing medical costs, and providing assistance for the poor as well as disadvantaged families. It also includes interventions from the compensation fund, maintaining electricity prices, providing housing support, and supporting transportation.

Speaking of transportation, he explained that the government allocated 7.2 billion MAD monthly to support professionals in this sector, highlighting that the government’s approach is to intervene whenever fuel prices rise to support these professionals.

The government spokesperson mentioned that the intervention seeks to support companies operating in this sector and to assist families relying on products affected by transportation cost increases, in addition to public transportation.

As to the government reshuffle, Baitas noted that it is unlikely to happen, stressing that this “normal procedure” occurs “whenever the political and constitutional circumstances are fulfilled.”
