Morocco is preparing new road rules for electric scooters and other personal mobility vehicles, including a headphone ban, helmet requirement and speed limits, government spokesperson Mustapha Baitas said Thursday.
Baitas said the draft decree, discussed after the Government Council, aims to adapt Morocco’s highway code to the growing use of new mobility devices in cities and public spaces.
“These new means of transport are now present on roads, in cities and in public space,” he said, adding that regulation had become necessary to protect both users and other road users.
The text would ban riders from wearing headphones while driving, on the grounds that they may be unable to hear warnings from other road users.
It would also set maximum speeds for the vehicles and require users to wear protective helmets.
Baitas said the measures fall under the implementation of Law 52.05 on Morocco’s highway code, but did not give a date for final adoption.
