Minister Baraka credits rainfall for reduction in water deficit, announces construction of new dams
Tuesday 23 January 2024 - 23:11

Minister of Equipment and Water Nizar Baraka announced a rise in dam capacity since September, reaching an additional 646 million cubic meters, but filling rates went down to 23.2% this year, down from 31.7% last year.

Responding to questions on accelerating drinking water projects in Parliament, the minister attributed the improvement to recent rainfall, reducing the water deficit from 70% to 57% compared to average years and 37% compared to last year.

However, Baraka highlighted the commissioning of new dams in Tiddas, Toudgha, Fask, Agdez, and Zagora, with Ghriss, Amdaz, and Koudyat El Berna dams operational in Sidi Kacem. The construction of 13 additional dams is rapidly progressing.

Addressing desalination, Baraka noted an agreement with the Office Chérifien des Phosphates to provide 100% desalinated drinking water for Safi and El Jadida, relieving pressure on the Al Massira dam. Desalination station construction is accelerating, with Casablanca’s opening imminent, Sidi Ifni in 2024, Dakhla in 2025, Agadir’s expansion by 2026, and nine other stations in the pipeline.

To bolster rural water supply, 20 new stations and three sizeable mobile desalination units will be deployed. Efforts to combat water waste include deploying 42 mobile stations, investigating leaks in canals, and penalizing over 370 infractions related to the inappropriate use of drinking water for green spaces.
