In a parliamentary session on Tuesday, Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, outlined a series of measures undertaken by his ministry to safeguard the Moroccan identity of the diaspora and fortify the cultural bonds connecting them to their homeland.
Responding to questions in the House of Councilors, Minister Bourita explained that the ministry’s strategy focuses on several mechanisms. Primarily, efforts are directed towards host countries, with a continued emphasis on enhancing the experiences of Moroccan cultural centers in nations like Canada, the Netherlands, and France.
Highlighting achievements in this regard, Bourita revealed that 55 cultural events were organized, benefiting approximately 150,000 Moroccans in Canada. This was part of the implementation of the action program of the “Maison du Maroc” cultural center in Montreal. Additionally, programs were implemented to preserve Moroccan identity in regions such as the Moroccan-Flemish House of Cultures “Darna” in Brussels and the Three Cultures Foundation in Seville.
The ministry’s second initiative centers around education, with a strong emphasis on teaching the Moroccan language and culture. A specialized program for teaching Arabic and Moroccan culture, supervised by the Hassan II Foundation for Moroccan Expatriates, has been implemented. Nearly 70,000 Moroccan students in foreign schools have benefited from this program, according to Bourita.
In line with the continuous care provided by HM King Mohammed VI to Moroccans residing abroad, the ministry is also contributing to the efforts of the Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs. This collaboration aims to provide religious guidance to protect diaspora members from any deviant discourse.
Bourita further highlighted the organization of cultural forums and summer universities for young Moroccans residing abroad. These events, held from July 22 to August 1, 2023, in Rabat, saw the participation of 300 students aged between 18 and 25, representing 31 host countries.
Moreover, the Hassan II Foundation for MRE organized cultural stays for the benefit of children from the Moroccan diaspora, as part of its broader efforts to strengthen ties and preserve the Moroccan identity among Moroccans living abroad.
