Human rights activists in Morocco and Tunisia are getting ready to start a “Maghreb Human Rights Forum” in the coming months, Hespress learns from an informed source.
This human rights forum will bring together advocates and interested parties from Tunisia and Morocco as well as the other three Maghreb nations, since it is anticipated that this new organization will be headquartered either in Tunisia or Morocco.
The same source stated that “this Maghreb forum will be the first of its kind in the region,” noting that “it will first be supportive of Morocco’s obtaining the honor of chairing the United Nations Human Rights Council and for this great responsibility that has fallen upon Rabat in representing Africa at this level.”
According to the same source, the founders of this project knew that it would be a good sign to revive the dream of the Maghreb Union, bring the various legal and political actors in these countries closer together, and try to contribute to resolving the existing disputes between these countries, particularly between Algeria and Morocco over the issue of Sahara.
In this regard, the source pointed out that “the forum will additionally work to develop a vision for resolving this conflict, which has been long-standing and has caused great harm to the people of the Maghreb.”
Since the Arab spring, devisions within the Maghreb Union intensified, fueled by fluctuant political realities, and successive crises in member countries.
Algeria’s support of Polisario separatists and its repeated hostile moves towards Morocco have driven neighboring countries further apart.
