Minister Nizar Baraka’s push for approving water cuts to address water shortage in Morocco has stirred concerns, amid calls by the National Federation of Consumer Associations Morocco demanding prior notice before implementing these cuts.

Baraka’s figures earlier this week revealed a sharp decline in Morocco’s water reserves, plummeting to 500 million cubic meters from 1.5 billion cubic meters in 2022. This alarming decrease is expected to prompt the authorities to regulate water consumption while hastening seawater desalination projects to combat the scarcity.

Criticism mounts as water shutdowns in high-stress areas occur without prior citizen notification regarding the operation’s scope and duration.

President of the Federation Wadie Madih,  acknowledged the government’s right to take measures but emphasized the crucial need to inform residents before halting water flow in cities and villages.

He highlighted the pressing issue of exorbitant water prices, warning that sustained high costs, coupled with service disruptions, would exacerbate the plight of Moroccan consumers.

While recognizing the acceptance of timed water interruptions in certain areas, Madih stressed the necessity of informing citizens to enable them to take necessary precautions.

Madih emphasized the government’s responsibility to address water scarcity, urging actions to coincide with setting reasonable water prices to avoid indirect impacts on the costs of goods and services for Moroccan citizens.
