The committee tasked with reviewing the Family Code continued to receive political parties on Wednesday, to listen to their proposals regarding the ongoing reforms under consideration.
Idriss Azami Al Idrissi, the parliamentary leader of the Justice and Development Party who headed the party’s delegation in the meeting, stated that the PJD unequivocally expressed its rejection of equality in inheritance, removal of “ta’sib”, marriage to non-Muslims, and several issues conflicting with “definitive texts.”
In a statement to Hespress, Al Idrissi expressed the party’s issues with certain discussions, not only related to the Family Code, such as decriminalizing “so-called consensual relationships” and allowing abortion under certain circumstances “in the name of bodily autonomy.”
Although these issues “are not directly related to the family, they affect and are influenced by the family, and we reject them.”
The spokesperson confirmed that the party proposed amendments primarily aimed at facilitating marriage and tightening divorce procedures, “considering its alarming rate and the alarming family breakdown which affects society.”
