Bank Al-Maghrib introduced a fresh series of banknotes and coins on Friday, including a new 100 dirham banknote alongside a diverse range of coins.
The project was exclusively executed by Moroccan experts within Dar As-Sikkah, encompassing the entire production process of the banknotes and coins.
The centerpiece of this currency revamp, the 100 dirham banknote, serves as a vibrant ode to the cultural heritage of the Moroccan Sahara.
12 zOn its front, the note displays the portrait of King Mohammed VI, the Kingdom’s coat of arms, intricate architectural details inspired by Moroccan portals, and stylized arcades reminiscent of Casablanca’s “Hassan II” mosque.
On its reverse side, the note portrays a stylized rendition of the “Mechouar Place” in Laayoune, the Tiznit-Dakhla expressway, and captures the essence of the traditional Tan-Tan “Moussem” festivities.
This newly minted banknote integrates advanced security features, including a three-windowed security thread, color-shifting magnetic ink, intaglio printing, and latent imagery, ensuring robust protection against counterfeiting.
The coin series accompanying the banknote release signifies diverse themes:
- The 10 centime coin embodies agriculture.
- Sustainable development and environmental concerns are represented by the 20 centime coin.
- Cultural diversity finds expression in the half dirham coin.
- National sovereignty is commemorated through the 1 dirham coin.
- The 5 dirham coin reflects the development of the Moroccan Sahara.
- Development and infrastructure take center stage on the 10 dirham coin.
