A group of Moroccan doctors performed the first-ever inflatable penile prosthesis surgery in the country, marking a significant achievement in the Kingdom’s medical field.

The inflatable penile implant, also known as a tri-compartmental inflatable penile prosthesis, happens when all drug treatments for erectile dysfunction fail or are not suitable for an individual.

Inflatable penile prostheses are the preferred implants because they simulate a natural sensation whether at rest or erect.

The first-ever inflatable penile prosthesis surgery in Morocco was led by Dr. Hamid Fakkak, Professor of Urology and Reproductive Medicine, and Reda Hallawi, a Urologist and Reproductive Surgeon, with the help of a 100% Moroccan medical team.

The Professor of Urology and Reproductive Medicine explained to Hespress that erectile dysfunction is a prevalent condition affecting 40% of men aged 40 and above with varying degrees.

Fakkak underlined that erectile dysfunction is a result of a plethora and intertwined factors, including diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular issues, previous surgeries for prostate, colon, or bladder cancer, and pelvic radiation therapy.

To solve the problem of erectile dysfunction, a new medical treatment option has been advanced which will enable men to maintain an erection that is suitable for sexual activity.

Fakkak said, “Traditional treatments for erectile dysfunction, including oral medications and injections, have shown decreasing effectiveness over time,” adding that “Inflatable penile prosthesis will restore normal sexual function.”

“The surgery is a physiological intervention that enables individuals to achieve near-normal erections. By implanting the hydraulic prosthesis, patients with erectile dysfunction can regain the ability to have a fulfilling sexual relationship,” explained the Professor of Urology and Reproductive Medicine.

The hydraulic prosthesis is different from the old prosthesis, explained Fakkak, in the sense that the latter option results in a continuous erection.

However, “The hydraulic prosthesis allows the person to control their erection and also enables them to control the deflation of the male reproductive organ,” Fakkak tells Hespress.

The Professor of Urology and Reproductive Medicine underscored that this is the first-ever surgery of this kind performed in Morocco.

In this regard, the Urologist and Reproductive Surgeon Hallawi expressed his pride over this groundbreaking achievement emphasizing that the surgery was performed by a complete Moroccan medical team. “The first inflatable penile implant in Morocco, and we feel proud,” he said.

The implant consists of inflatable cylinders that are surgically placed in the corpora cavernosa. This pump allows men to inflate and deflate the implant on demand. It is itself connected to a water tank located next to the bladder.

The inflatable penile implant cannot be seen with the naked eye. The surgery carries a risk of infection. However, advances in antibiotic impregnation have significantly reduced post-operative infections.

Statistically, the current infection rate ranges from 0.5% to 3%. In the event of an infection, the implant may need to be removed in a separate procedure.

92% of men with a penile implant do not regret choosing this radical solution, and 75% of implants are still functional 15 years after installation, according to literature.
