In a recent report, experts from the International Labour Organization (ILO) stated that ChatGPT is not aiming to replace your job and may even improve it.

The report offers a comprehensive review of the potential impact of generative artificial intelligence (AI) on various jobs and tasks, as well as the prospective effects on work quantity and quality.

Called “Generative AI and Jobs: A Global Analysis of potential effects on job quantity and quality”, the report was prepared by three social scientists who work for the UN agency and believe that the new technology will probably enhance occupations rather than replace them totally by automating some duties.

According to the ILO report, administrative work had the greatest amount of technology exposure.  Only a tiny portion of jobs were found to be in danger of redundancy in other occupational groups, such as managers, professionals, and technicians.

“As a result, the most important impact of the technology is likely to be of augmenting work,  automating some tasks within an occupation while leaving time for other duties, as opposed to fully automating occupations,” the authors said.

The study shows how the consequences on nations with varying levels of development fluctuate noticeably and are related to current economic systems and existing technical gaps.

The automating effects of generative AI could affect 5.5% of all employment in affluent countries, but only 0.4% of employment in low-income countries.

According to the authors, the potential for augmentation is approximately equal across nations, indicating that with the appropriate policies, generative artificial intelligence (AI) might provide significant advantages for emerging countries.

As more than twice as much of female employment is at risk from automation, its prospective implications are expected to differ dramatically for men and women.

This is a result of the overrepresentation of women in clerical jobs, particularly in high- and middle-income nations.

Furthermore, because clerical work has historically been a significant source of employment for women as economies grow, widespread usage of Generative AI may prevent some clerical positions from ever emerging in low-income nations.

The research concluded by stating that how Generative AI is embraced and implemented would have a significant impact on socioeconomic factors.
