Asma Hamza, a Sudanese composer and oud musician, is honored in today’s Google Doodle. She was one of the winners of the Laylat AlQadr AlKubra music competition in Sudan on this day in 1997.
This victory marked a turning point in her career and contributed to her rise to prominence in a field dominated by men.
Asma Hamza, who was born in 1932, grew up loving music and aspiring to be a singer. Her vocal cords, however, were not designed to accomplish it in a safe manner, so she began whistling songs instead of singing them.
Her father rented an oud, a lute-like instrument with a narrower neck and no frets so she could practice after hearing her whistle in unison.
The self-taught artist played Oud from her memory and composed melodies for several respected Arab artists over the years.
Today also marks the birthday of the late Georges Lemaître, the man who came up with the life-altering hypothesis, The Big Bang.
July 17 is also the birthday celebration of Mexican artist and activist Francisco El Maestro Toledo, one of the most influential artists in modern Mexican history.
