Morocco has responded proactively to the challenge of water scarcity by implementing projects that are structured within a participatory framework, stated Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, in Fez on Thursday.

“In order to adapt to the impact of climate change on water resources, the Kingdom has proactively taken immediate measures to address water scarcity, programming and activating projects structured in a participatory framework between all sectors and institutions concerned by water, as well as the private sector, given its experience in carrying out major projects,” Baraka stressed during his speech at the opening of the 3rd International Conference on Water and Climate (ICWC3).

Similarly to many countries worldwide, especially those in the Mediterranean region, Morocco is confronted with challenges arising from water scarcity and its uneven distribution over time and space, the minister said. Emphasizing that this situation is expected to exacerbate in the future due to increasing temperatures and diminishing water supplies.

The government official also highlighted Morocco’s commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement and the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals in the water sector. Baraka underlined that in line with the directives of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the country is currently updating its water policy to adapt to climate change. This involves expediting project implementation, integrating programs across sectors involved in the water industry, and placing a strong emphasis on the development of non-conventional water resources, he stated.

The 3rd International Conference on Water and Climate (ICWC3) has attracted more than 500 participants from around the globe, organized under the High patronage of HM King Mohammed VI.

With the theme of “Basin management, key to adaptation and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals,” this significant global gathering builds upon the United Nations Water Conference held in New York earlier this year and precedes the upcoming COP28 in the United Arab Emirates. The conference serves as a platform to underscore the criticality of enhanced integrated water resources management (IWRM) amidst a landscape marked by numerous challenges.
