Lekjaa: Direct housing aid to be implemented in coming weeks
Tuesday 27 June 2023 - 14:30

Minister Delegate in charge of the budget Faouzi Lekjaa confirmed that the decree on direct support for the acquisition of housing is in its final stages of preparation, and will be implemented in coming weeks.

Responding to questions from deputies during the weekly session devoted to oral questions in the House of Representatives, Lekjaa said that the Minister of National Urban Development, Housing and Urban Policy had been working with various actors on procedures on the implementation of the decree on direct support for housing acquisition.

The Minister pointed out that, in recent years, the previous approach had been to support demand by granting tax exemptions to developers offering homes for purchase, whereas in 2022 the government has decided to support future buyers directly.

As for financing the most vulnerable categories, Lekjaa revealed that the Intilaka program had enabled some 39,253 loans to be granted, with an estimated financing amount of MAD 8.7 billion.

Lekjaa stated that this financing should create more than 112,000 jobs, adding that a range of mechanisms have been developed to help small businesses cope with the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic.

With regard to the implementation of tax reform, the Minister emphasized that the process, which began in 2020, would continue in 2024 “through the introduction of a series of reforms to the VAT system to make it fairer, without impacting businesses”.

“We will try as far as possible to work towards reducing VAT on basic products, such as medicines, school supplies and other products.”

This measure is to reduce the prices of these products and restore the neutrality of value-added tax, detailed Lekjaa to Parliament.

In 2024, “we will also address the issue of the informal sector, which is a huge burden on the national economy,” continued the Minister.
