Taqa Morocco SA has unveiled ambitious plans to contribute to Morocco’s energy transition goals by developing wind and solar projects with a combined capacity of 1 gigawatt by 2030.
In an interview with Bloomberg on Wednesday, Chief Executive Officer Abdelmajid Iraqui Houssaini said that Taqa Morocco SA is also considering investments in desalination projects in Morocco. This project comes in the aftermath of a series of severe droughts over the past five years.
During the Bloomberg New Economy Gateway Africa forum held in Marrakesh, Houssaini emphasized the company’s commitment to renewable energies and the implementation of emission-reduction technologies in its coal-fired plants.
“Significant investment in renewable energies and the adoption of emission-reduction technology for its coal-fired plants means 35 percent to 50 percent of Taqa Morocco’s capacity may come from renewables by the end of the decade,” Houssaini said.
The company plans to allocate 900 megawatts to wind power and 100 megawatts to solar energy.
Houssaini highlighted the cost and effectiveness of renewable energy in facilitating desalination processes in Morocco, a country that has been suffering from water scarcity for a long period.
The CEO expressed the company’s desire to become a leading and highly competitive developer of water resources. He justified this strategic move by noting that Taqa Morocco SA is already involved in renewables. The expansion into the water sector aligns with their existing portfolio.
Taqa Morocco SA has pledged to reduce its carbon footprint by at least 25 percent by 2030, showing its commitment to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship, according to Houssaini.
