The Consumer Price Index experienced a 1.4% increase in April 2023 compared to the previous month, according to recent data. The uptick was primarily influenced by a notable 3.2% rise in food prices, while non-food prices remained steady.

Among food products, the most significant price increases were observed in categories such as “Fish and Seafood” (13.3%), “Fruits” (11.4%), “Vegetables” (5.4%), “Meat” (4.1%), “Milk, Cheese, and Eggs” (0.5%), and “Oils and Fats” (0.3%). However, prices for “Bread and Cereals” and “Coffee, Tea, and Cocoa” saw a marginal decrease of 0.1%. On the non-food front, fuel prices experienced a substantial drop of 2.9%.

Analyzing the regional impact, several areas faced varying degrees of inflation.

Al-Hoceima recorded the highest increase with 3.2%, followed by Laâyoune (2.3%), Tanger and Safi (2.1%), Oujda (2.0%), and Errachidia (1.9%). Other regions that witnessed price hikes include Beni-Mellal (1.8%), Casablanca, Tétouan, Meknès, and Dakhla (1.4%), Fès (1.3%), Agadir (1.0%), and Settat (0.9%). Meanwhile, Guelmim experienced a slight decrease of 0.1%.

Comparing the figures to the same period last year, the Consumer Price Index rose by 7.8% in April 2023. This increase can be attributed to a significant 16.3% surge in food prices and a moderate 2.0% rise in non-food prices.

Within the non-food category, price fluctuations ranged from a 0.1% decrease in “Transport” to a 6.7% increase in “Restaurants and Hotels.”

Considering a more comprehensive measure, the underlying inflation indicator, which excludes volatile price products and those subject to public tariffs, increased by 0.3% compared to March 2023 and a substantial 7.6% compared to April 2022.

These figures highlight the persistent inflationary pressures experienced by consumers in the current economic landscape.
