Meta fined for EU data transfer to the US

The corporation Meta Platforms Inc. will be fined for violating privacy laws. The company is charged with sending Facebook user data from the EU to US servers.

The fine imposed on Meta will exceed the previous record-holder, 746 million euros paid by Amazon, according to Reuters.

The Irish Data Protection Commissioner is finalizing a prohibition on the legal mechanism used by Facebook to transmit European users’ data, because of worries that U.S. intelligence agencies could have access to the data.

The social network company will also be required to halt any data transfers to the US that depend on unsafe contractual conditions by the Irish Data Protection Commission, which regulates EU operations.

In 2020, EU judges revoked a law governing data flow because they believed that sending citizens’ data to the US was not secure.

Facebook’s parent firm disregarded previously a Supreme Court warning intended to safeguard user data from spying by US security agencies.

Soon after, the Irish government issued a preliminary order notifying Facebook that it was no longer permitted to transfer data to the US. The business chose not to comment on the situation.
