Livestock professionals are getting ready to import new shipments of sheep next week, in order to balance market needs for the approaching Eid Al Adha, in accordance with the agreement with the Prime Minister about livestock imports for the religious occasion.
Hespress AR reports that the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries is considering shipping more than 6,000 sheep heads.
Professionals in the industry predicted that the national herd of sheep and goats would approach 6 million heads, but that the demand would not exceed 5 million as in past years.
The Moroccan Federation of Livestock Actors requested Aziz Akhannouch to review the requirement related to certificates of slaughter, which was impeding the importation of cows and sheep that were prepared for slaughter.
“The removal of this condition will contribute to ensuring and accelerating imports, and raising the competitiveness of exporting countries to obtain low prices that will contribute to achieving government goals,” the federation said.
The livestock replenishment will allay Moroccan worries over the national herd’s abundance. In case of an agreement on the deletion of the slaughter certificate, new shipments of 20,000 heads of sheep and cows for Eid al Adha will arrive in the upcoming weeks.
According to the Ministry, requiring the importer to present a certificate of slaughter imposes the confinement of the sale process within the slaughterhouses of major cities and not with the rest of the cities, eventually, this will contribute to the disparity in the price of meat between Moroccan cities.
