At least 85 people were killed and dozens injured in a crowd crush in Yemen’s capital on Wednesday, as the city’s poor gathered to receive charity handouts from local merchants.
The handouts amounted to 5,000 rials, a mere USD8.
Footage of the tragedy showed dozens of people screaming and shoving, while other shots showed dead bodies on the ground and piles of abandoned clothing and shoes littering the scene.
While the reason behind the stampede remains unknown, AFP reported that eyewitnesses said gunfire sparked the chaos.
