Spain’s Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, has responded to comments made by the President of the House of Councillors,  Enaam Mayara, regarding the sovereignty of Ceuta and Melilla.

Naam Mayara, a member of the nationalist Istiqlal party, had suggested that the “occupied” cities, will be recovered in the future through negotiation, without resorting to arms.

Robles said “with absolute and total forcefulness, Ceuta and Melilla are Spanish; there is nothing more to discuss”.

Robles did not address Mayara’s comments directly but instead emphasized her personal connection to Ceuta and Melilla, stating “I feel very Ceutí and Melillense because I feel Spanish,” she was quotes by Europa Press.

When asked whether the Spanish government would request a rectification from Morocco, Robles simply stated that there was no debate on the matter.

The sovereignty of Ceuta and Melilla has long been a contentious issue between Spain and Morocco, with the Spanish government maintaining that they are an integral part of Spain, while Morocco disputes this claim.

The Istiqlal party, of which Mayara is a member, is part of the tripartite party headed by the Moroccan government, making her comments particularly significant.

Mayara made the comments during an evening organized by the Istiqlal women’s organization. The event, titled “One year after the new stage of Spanish-Moroccan relations: Fundamentals and Opportunities.”

According to a video of the meeting that was published by Facebook, Mayara considered that “Spanish colonization continues in Ceuta and Melilla”.

He added that the Istiqlal “did not stop, and will not stop, talking about colonization in these two cities and the possible solutions to recover them.” He also emphasized that both cities “will not be subject to blackmail”.
