A groundbreaking study on the long-term impact of AI on the US workforce was conducted by OpenAI, the company responsible for the widely popular chatbot, ChatGPT.
The study, carried out in collaboration with academic researchers, analyzed the probable effects of future AI systems such as ChatGPT on various occupations, highlighting which jobs are likely to be impacted and which ones are safer, such as manual labor and skilled trades. However, the study’s results are based on technology that does not yet exist.
According to the study, 80% of the workforce could see up to 10% of their work performed by a large language model (LLM) such as ChatGPT in the future. Additionally, up to 19% of workers could experience up to 50% of their tasks affected.
The researchers believe that if universal access to LLMs were available, 15% of all tasks performed by US workers could be completed faster without compromising quality. If combined with customized software and tools, between 47% and 56% of all tasks could be completed more efficiently.
The researchers note that the implications of LLMs on the US workforce could be considerable, with significant economic, social, and policy effects, which is quite an understatement considering their predictions.
