The Director of the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ), Habboub Charkaoui, held a press conference to disclose the latest developments in the ongoing investigation into the death of a policeman.
The official explained that several bodies including Casablanca’s judicial police are cooperating in this investigation.
The focus of the investigation was the location where the victim’s private vehicle was set on fire and left there in a rural region.
Habboub explained that after discovering the victim’s body at the crime scene, the investigating bodies initially were unable to confirm any of the theories. As a result, the team of investigators dealt with all plausible theories, including the terrorist element of this, which necessitated further investigation.
After considering absence of the victim’s work gun and handcuffs, as well as the suspects’ stalking activities, investigators concluded that this was a terrorist crime committed by at least two individuals, motivated by theft or an extremist motive.
The concerted efforts of the involved agencies led to the first suspect’s arrest in Casablanca, the second suspect’s discovery in hiding in the city of Fes, and the subsequent capture of the third suspect in Casablanca after the authorities uncovered his hiding spot.
“I can only commemorate the great interaction of citizens with the investigation teams for reporting anything suspicious to serve justice,” said Habboub.
“I applaud those who supported the victim’s family through their great condolence letters and support,” he continued.
The suspects all recently declared their loyalty to ISIS after one of them recited what they believe to be the pledge of presumed allegiance to the body, which confirmed that this is a terrorist crime, according to information provided to the team of investigators thus far in their investigation.
According to the information that is currently available, the suspects had intended to travel to the Sahel region to join the terrorist group Daesh but were unable to do so due to a lack of funds. As a result, they began to plan local terrorist attacks against security personnel, banks, and financial institutions.
The officer stated that the suspects had only recently joined Daesh a month and a half when asked about the potential that this is a case of rapid extremism, which confirmed that it is.
The primary suspect, who is 31 years old, already has a lengthy criminal history after being charged with drug use and violent theft in the past.
The investigation established that the suspects specifically picked a bank, agreed to rob it, and scouted the area around it, proving the existence of a premeditated motive.
The second suspect, who is 37, assisted the first suspect in carrying out the murder. The third is 50 years old and was involved in lighting the car on fire in order to manipulate the crime scene and tamper with the evidence.
The investigation still carries on trying to identify anyone related to the crimes.
