The Casablanca slum residents are calling for urgent authorities’ intervention, after recent rainfall drowned their homes and neighborhoods.
The city’s marginalized areas lack some of the basic conditions for a decent life, including infrastructure necessary to live through extreme weather conditions.
The houses built in these areas have often been erected outside urban legal frameworks, but their existence has persisted in the absence of alternatives for the vulnerable families populating the slums.
Many of the slum residents in a number of Casablanca provinces found themselves in critical situations as a result of heavy rains, which suffocated of sewers in the area.
The suffering of residents of these neighborhoods in Casablanca increases with each winter, as water from heavy rains often gets into the residents, depriving locals from sleep.
Civil and human rights activists in the region are calling for local and elected authorities, to intervene and end the marginalization of the slum residents in light of these difficult climatic conditions.
Aziz El Hajj, head of the Human Rights Commission for Regional Justice, confirmed that the slum residents live in a tragic situation with every heavy rainfall, as waters floods their houses and turns them into pools.
The head of the commission stressed, in a statement to Hespress AR that elected officials “make false promises to the residents of these slums during electoral campaigns, without working on solutions that would provide them with adequate housing.”
The same activist pointed out that “citizen who lives in these slums need decent housing to improve their situation, and overcome the suffering he is experiencing in these harsh conditions,” saying that a goal as such should be the officials’ top priority.
