On its last day, February 21, the Alexandria Short Film Festival announced the winners, revealing that the Moroccan film “Sharaa” had won the Hypatia Golden Award for Best Film, the most prestigious title at the event.
The 19-minute short film, directed by Alhussein Hanin, that was shown at the festival for the first time in the Middle East and North Africa, tells the tale of “Assou,” a man in his 40s who adores his wife and daughter but struggles with moral choices.
The festival honored Moroccan Sofia Khayyari for her animated picture, “Shadow of the Butterflies,” which was a collaboration between Morocco, France, and Qatar.
Mohamed Mahmoud launched the Alexandria Short Film Festival in 2015, with Mohamed Saadoun and Mony Mahmoud, who currently serves as its president, director, and creative director.
The Artists’ Circle (Dayret Al-Fann) Association is in charge of organizing the yearly celebration.
This festival aims to create a favorable environment for the exchange of ideas between filmmakers from all over the world and to give short film creators the chance to screen their works in front of an audience, whether they are narrative, documentary, or animated, in order to foster fruitful discussions between the filmmaker and the audience and to give them a secure platform for showcasing their work and reaping the rewards of their labors.
