The contraceptive implant, an important tool for family planning, will become available in Morocco soon, according to Minister of Health Khalid Aid Taleb.
The Minister announced that the new means of contraception, so far unavailable in Morocco, will soon be introduced.
The contraceptive chip, inserted under the skin, delivers contraceptive hormones for up to five years, and is considered one of the most effective contraception methods.
The implant, commonly called Nexplanon, is a small flexible plastic rod that’s placed under the skin in the women’s upper arms by a doctor or nurse.
It releases the progestogen hormone into the bloodstream to prevent pregnancy. The implant can be useful for women who experience oestrogen resistance, and who can’t use contraception that the hormone.
The implant can be easily taken out if the woman experiences any undesired side effects, and natural fertility is restored very quickly and naturally in case of wanted pregnancies.
The Minister made the announcement in Parliament on Monday, as he elaborated on Morocco’s gains on reproductive and women’s health.
In his response to an oral question in the first chamber, the Minister stressed that it was “an effective means of contraception that can contribute to family planning.”
The availability and universal access to contraception is considered to be one of the pillars of family planning, as ensuring the tools availability reduces unwanted pregnancies, and the possible repercussions those entail.
While speaking on the subject, the Minister of Health reminded Parliament that “the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) has dropped considerably, from 322 deaths per 100,000 births to 72.6” in recent years.
In addition, the national infant mortality rate decreased from 84 deaths per 100,000 people in 1992 to 22.16 today.
The Minister affirmed that Morocco “has always been involved in international initiatives aimed at family planning, and that it has been deploying efforts to improve the field since 1966.”
“The indications that we currently have show that Morocco has had an effective strategy, confirmed by achieved results.”
