Spain’s international development agency has approved a €500,000 grant to strengthen access to sexual and reproductive health services for migrants in Morocco, according to official funding records published by Spain’s Ministry of Finance.
The funding, awarded by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), will support a project to expand sexual and reproductive health services for migrants in Morocco.
The grant went to the Moroccan Association for Family Planning (AMPF), a nonprofit that provides reproductive healthcare and runs programs for vulnerable groups, including migrants and refugees.
Official records show AECID awarded the €500,000 as two non-repayable grants for the same project, with the two entries together making up the full amount.
The project is meant to expand access to sexual and reproductive health services for migrants in Morocco, one of the main transit countries for people traveling from sub-Saharan Africa toward Europe. The country also hosts asylum seekers and refugees who depend on humanitarian and healthcare support.
AMPF, a member of the International Planned Parenthood Federation, already operates reproductive health programs for migrants in Morocco, providing consultations, health education and referrals to specialized care.
Conservative voices in Spain , including former lawmaker and police officer Pablo Cambronero, criticized the grant, arguing the funding could make irregular migration routes more attractive by expanding services for migrants in Morocco.
He also questioned the decision to split the €500,000 into two grant entries and called for greater transparency over how the funds will be managed and who will benefit from the project.
Spain has long funded migration projects in Morocco, backing border management, humanitarian aid and migrant protection programs.
In 2024, Madrid approved a €20 million package to support Morocco’s migration management efforts, adding to years of financial assistance aimed at reducing irregular crossings and strengthening protection for vulnerable migrants.
