A joint declaration issued following the works of the 12th session of the high-level Morocco-Spain meeting held today, Thursday in Rabat, confirmed that Spain renews its position on the Sahara issue.
Spain’s reiterated its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan proposal, which was announced in the joint declaration of April 7, 2022, following the meeting between King Mohammed VI and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.
The joint statement of 7 April stated that Spain considers that the Moroccan initiative for autonomy presented by Morocco in 2007 is the most serious, realistic and credible basis for resolving the dispute over the Sahara.
Spain also recognized, in the joint declaration of April 7, 2022, the importance of the Sahara issue for Morocco, and Morocco’s serious and credible efforts within the framework of the United Nations to find a compatible solution to it.
Under this declaration, the two countries commit themselves to revitalizing trade exchanges and investments, in order to implement joint development projects within the framework of a win-win partnership.
The two governments affirmed their commitment to preserving and strengthening the relationship between Morocco and the European Union.
They also expressed their will to further develop Morocco’s advanced status with the European Union, as the upcoming Association Council is an important occasion in this regard.
On the other hand, Spain noted the dynamism of openness, progress and modernity in Morocco, characterized, in particular, by the new development model, advanced regionalization, the national strategy for sustainable development, and the new workshops for social solidarity.
In this joint declaration, the two countries affirmed their intention to strengthen their cooperation in the field of combating terrorism, and to continue joint work, within the framework of the United Nations, in order to develop international efforts in the field of combating terrorism and its financing.
On the other hand, Spain welcomed the effective practical cooperation that links it with Morocco in the field of circular and regular migration, which has turned into a model at the international level.
The joint declaration also stated that the two countries, which share a unique cultural and human heritage, are called upon to develop a new “human capital” (twinning cities, partnerships between universities, student mobility, joint initiatives of associative actors, the establishment of study committees and research institutes…).
The works of the twelfth session of the Morocco-Spain high-level meeting, which witnessed the participation of an important Spanish delegation and a number of members of the Moroccan government, witnessed the signing of about twenty bilateral agreements that concerned a number of areas of cooperation.
