Agricultural activities would have declined by 15.2% in 2022, after an increase of 17.8% in 2021, according to the 2023 Economic Forecast of the High Commission for Planning (HCP).
“The spectre of drought has been more severe overall in 2022, with a rainfall deficit of almost half that of a normal year, which would have penalized crops and weakened the resilience of the animal sectors, against a backdrop of rising energy costs, fertilizers and livestock feed,” said Thursday in Rabat, the High Commissioner for Planning, Ahmed Lahlimi Alami, in a speech read on his behalf by Secretary General of the HCP, Ayachi Khellaf, at a press conference dedicated to the presentation of the 2023 Provisional Economic Budget.
Excluding agriculture, Lahlimi said that companies have faced difficulties that have weighed heavily on their activity, noting that the proportion of manufacturing companies that have reported supply brakes, in surveys conducted by the HCP, has reached 65.4% in mid-2022, instead of 15% in 2019.
He also stressed that the lack of demand has also become more pressing from the third quarter of 2022, especially for the quarrying industries, construction and information services and communication.
